This review of the Kenyan Netflix series Country Queen season 1 contains no spoilers.

Returning home can be bliss for some, but horrific for others. In this very first Kenyan Netflix original series, there is a lot of complexity to return home; much more than what the main character buys.

The main character Akisa harbors two lives. One life in which she masks herself, the other in which she has to face a trauma from the past. Entangled in it all is a tale of two worlds in which an invasive mining company threatens the livelihood of a village. Akisa faces the difficult task of facing a painful past while saving the village from corrupt capitalism. A ruthless story with a lot of pain and consequences. In any case, this isn't a bullshit story. It is covered in fear and a sobering outlook on life.

Country Queen is rougher than the title suggests; there is little to be happy about in this world where pleasure is met with an open wound of pain. The Netflix series positions itself as a realistic case study of corruption. Where poorer areas are abused for one person's gain. Interestingly, Akisa's position in this world is contradictory. Coming home brings an idea of aligning values. This is by no means an easy story to investigate; observing Akisa, her friends, colleagues, and family means taking note of the moral ambiguity people face.

From a production point of view, this Kenyan series is good. Country Queen delivers performances with ease as the cast bombards the screen with natural input. There is hardly a foot wrong in this. They should be commended for their good attendance and bringing such an appealing Kenyan series.

The only criticism I have is overindulgence. Each chapter feels longer than it needs to be, with the makers desperately trying to prove as much context as possible. But sometimes too much context can be presumptuous, and this story doesn't require much explanation.

However, saying that Country Queen is a creditable watch and contributes to the growing international Netflix Originals list. The slogan for Country Queen"when home is a battlefield" sums up the series beautifully.
